A lot of scientific research is done on octopuses. Also by artist Mette Sterre. She asked herself and students of the Minor Advanced Prototyping of TU Delft the question: 'How can you experience the world sensory like an octopus'? Together they developed a new work based on the skin of an octopus. This work and the research process, in combination with her previous work, form the core of the exhibition: An Octopus Named If. The octopus also plays a role in exhibited works by the other participating artists, Monira Al Qadiri, Sarah Browne, Paulo Arraiano and Lee Wen. Concepts such as metamorphosis, camouflage, and physicality are the connecting elements.
An Octopus Named If a collaboration between 38CC and TU Delft's Crossing Parallels programme, which brings together artists and scientists to work on innovative projects. This is in line with the Museum van het Alsof program line, in which 38CC investigates the role of fiction in art, science and society.
During the opening on May 13, Mette Sterre gave a performance with the new body mask based on the skin of an octopus, which was created in collaboration with TU Delft students. Mathijs Koerts, Miles Luxembourg and Veerle Driessen contributed to the performance.
