I can be a mountain

Artist Eva Spierenburg (NL, 1987) transformed the space of 38CC into a new world. With clay, sand, bone-like branches, fish skin, sisal, textiles and kilometres of embroidery thread, she created drawings, murals and installations that stem from her stay in Iceland. There she felt that we are connected to everything and everyone around us. The particles of water that are in our bodies once flowed into the sea or fell to the earth as raindrops. With I can be a mountain, Spierenburg wants to capture that feeling of connectedness and convey it to you: what does it mean to be part of an eternal universe as a mortal being? Until now, Spierenburg has tried to find a visual form for sensory experiences and the traces they leave behind in the body. I can be a mountain shows a turning point in her work: the focus shifts from what happens in the body to the relationship between body and earth. "Our body absorbs the environment and vice versa, which makes us part of a fluid whole that is constantly in motion. And which means that our body is not a separate thing that is detached from other bodies and nature. In daily life here in the Netherlands, I currently find it very difficult to experience this connection with everything and everyone, in Iceland it was much easier. I think that my work is currently an attempt to hold on to and convey the feeling of connection that I had there."
